Son tries to punch father after he refuses to give him money

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): An Orange Walk Town father washing dishes at his own sink ended the night defending himself from his son’s raised fists, and the young man has now been formally charged with common assault.

According to the Belize Police Department, a 57-year-old pharmacist of Orange Walk Town reported that at about 9:50 p.m., while he was washing dishes at his residence, his son arrived home appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and demanded money from him.

The father refused, and his reason traced back to that same morning. At about 6:00 a.m., he had discovered that BZ$300 was missing from his wallet, and he confronted his son about it, believing, he told police, that only his son could have taken it, since the only other person living in the house is the young man’s mother, who is chronically ill. The son denied taking the money.

The denial, according to the report, turned to aggression. The son raised his fist twice to hit his father, but the older man grabbed his son’s hand to prevent the blows from landing, and asked a neighbour to call the police for assistance.

Police recorded a statement from the father, and the son was detained. He was identified as Rojer Ismael Duran, a 26-year-old unemployed man of Orange Walk Town.

The custody process moved at the pace his condition allowed. On August 4, he was read and issued his suspect’s rights in custody acknowledgement form, which he signed and received a copy of, the step having awaited a state in which he could properly receive it, as he had appeared highly intoxicated and was behaving aggressively. On August 5, police obtained a warrant in the first instance and formally arrested and charged Duran with the crime of common assault. Cautioned once more, he chose to remain silent.

Behind the charge sheet sits a household’s quiet sorrow: a father forced to hold off his own son’s fists, and a family whose troubles have now crossed from the kitchen to the courtroom. For families struggling with a loved one’s substance use, support through health services and community organizations can reach the problem before the police must.
