By Aaron Humes: A Belize City man is recovering from injuries sustained after trying to fight a sudden fire at his residence on Friday evening.
Police and fire personnel were called to Hibiscus Lane, Belize City, Belize District, around 7 p.m., and found a two-bedroom bungalow cement structure measuring approximately 24 × 30 feet engulfed in flames, which were put out by National Fire Service personnel.
Initial investigation revealed that about 7:00 p.m., 69-year-old Porfirio Saul Cardona was in the living room with his son Saul Peter Cardona, 44, who left to plug in an electric fan in another room, and shortly after, he heard noises and smelled something burning and found the fan on fire.
Saul Cardona immediately went back to the living room and took his father outside to safety. He then went back to try to extinguish the fire, but his efforts were futile and the fire went out of control.
Neither the house nor its contents were insured and the estimated damages to the building are unknown at this time.
Police investigations continue.
