Son denied bail and jailed for allegedly beating up 72-year-old dad

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 23-year-old Belize City man has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after he was arraigned on a charge of wounding his elderly father.

Joel Macario Hamilton, of Belama, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Neeshad Rohammed in Court #7 on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. He was read a single charge of wounding.

The allegation is that Hamilton caused a wound to his 72-year-old father, Joseph Hamilton.

Hamilton initially pleaded guilty with an explanation, but after the facts were read to him, he appeared uncertain about whether he agreed with the police’s version of events. Since he was unable to clearly accept the facts, Magistrate Rohammed entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf.

The prosecutor objected strongly to bail, citing the age of the victim, the fact that Hamilton and his father live in the same household, and concerns for the victim’s safety.

Magistrate Rohammed asked Hamilton whether he could remove himself from the home and live elsewhere, but he was unable to provide an answer.

Bail was denied in the first instance, and Hamilton was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until July 29, 2026.
