By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Government Lotteries Ltd. (BGLL), has informed the public that of 9 winning tickets in this year’s “Million Dalla Jackpot” only 1 was not claimed and the winnings for that ticket have now been forfeited after exceeding the 30-day limit to be claimed. Interestingly, the company also reported that “this year’s sales did not produce a profit”.
According to BGLL, 8 of the 9 winning tickets have been claimed, amounting to a total payout of $888,888.88. The rules of the game stipulate that any winning ticket not claimed within 30 days will be forfeited. Tough luck for the person who did not redeem their winnings for their winning ticket.
“Customarily, all unclaimed winnings of the games administered by BGLL revert to the company’s total,” the company noted.
Most interestingly, however, the company added “In the case of the Million Dalla Jackpot game, the profits of the game were earmarked to be donated to a charitable organization to be decided upon by the company’s Board of Directors. Unfortunately, this year’s sales did not produce a profit. Nevertheless, it has been decided that the unclaimed winnings in the amount of $111,111.11 will be donated to a charitable organization. The receipient of recipients of such donation shall be decided upon at the next meeting of the Board of Directors scheduled for mid-February.”
This announcement raises eyebrows as the new Boledo regime has been touted by the Government for its management and increase in revenue over previous management by Brads yet, in its second consecutive year of holding the Million Dalla Jackpot the company reports no profits made on this particular game. It raises the question on whether or not the Million Dalla Jackpot will be continued. The public and media had also previously raised questions about transparency since BGLL does not disclose any of its winners or provide documentation for any such monies paid out. It is also unknown how BGLL’s board will choose which charity gets the unclaimed prize money and whether or not that charity will be disclosed.
Still, BGLL affirms that profits from all games are used to fund social programs such as National Health Insurance, sports and other charitable programs.
