By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize’s ancient Maya city of Caracol is receiving international attention after Smithsonian Magazine featured groundbreaking archaeological discoveries that are changing how researchers understand one of the world’s great ancient civilizations.
The November 2026 feature highlights more than four decades of research by archaeologists Arlen and Diane Chase, whose work has revealed that Caracol was far more than a collection of temples hidden deep in the Belizean rainforest.
At its height, Caracol was a thriving metropolis with more than 100,000 inhabitants, an extensive road network, marketplaces, residential neighborhoods and sophisticated agricultural infrastructure.
Researchers estimate that the ancient city contained approximately 36,000 structures spread across 77 square miles.
One of the most remarkable discoveries is that nearly every resident lived within a 20 minute walk of a marketplace, challenging earlier assumptions that Maya cities primarily served religious and ceremonial purposes.
Archaeologists also identified approximately 1,600 reservoirs, demonstrating how the Maya managed water resources and supported a large population.
The research has revealed that Caracol was once a powerful regional kingdom that defeated the mighty city of Tikal in present day Guatemala.
Another major breakthrough came in 2025 when archaeologists uncovered a royal tomb believed to belong to Te K’ab Chaak, the founder of Caracol’s ruling dynasty.
Among the discoveries were jade ornaments, elaborate pottery and fragments of a ceremonial death mask.
The site is also home to Caana, the 141 foot structure that remains Belize’s tallest human made building.
The Smithsonian feature also highlights improved road access to Caracol, making the archaeological site more accessible to visitors.
For Belize, the international recognition draws renewed attention to the country’s extraordinary Maya heritage and the archaeological discoveries still emerging from its forests.
