Small Farmers receive subsidized breeding bulls to strengthen Belize’s cattle Industry

By Zoila Palma:  Ten small-scale cattle farmers are now better equipped to improve their herds after receiving subsidized breeding bulls through a Ministry of Agriculture initiative aimed at strengthening livestock production across Belize.

The bull distribution ceremony was held this morning in Central Farm, where the Ministry of Agriculture partnered with the Belize Livestock Producers’ Association (BLPA) to provide quality breeding bulls to selected farmers.

The recipients, chosen by the BLPA through its selection process, were able to purchase the animals for $2,000 each, significantly below their market value of $2,700 or more, with the Ministry covering the remaining cost. Two of the ten beneficiaries were female farmers.

Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson said Belize’s cattle industry continues to experience strong growth, and initiatives such as this are designed to improve livestock genetics while supporting small producers.

He noted that the breeding bulls will not only enhance the quality of the recipients’ herds but can also be rented to neighboring farmers, allowing entire farming communities to benefit from improved genetics and increased productivity.

BLPA Chairman Arden Edwards thanked the Ministry of Agriculture for its continued support and expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to create opportunities for livestock producers.

Senior Advisor Hugh O’Brien also congratulated the recipients, emphasizing that the programme is intended to help small farmers access improved breeding stock and strengthen the country’s cattle industry through better genetics and sustainable production practices.
