By Aaron Humes: On Friday, the day she was to have been sentenced for attempted murder, 33-year-old Keyren Tzib no-showed in court, claiming she is ill with COVID-19.

However, no medical documents were furnished to the court to prove it by attorneys Darrell Bradley and Arthur Saldivar and so Justice Candace Nanton revoked her bail for violation of conditions of her bail.

The judge ordered her arrest immediately and she was remanded to the Belize Central Prison without bail until her sentencing date set for May 10.

Tzib was found guilty of the attempted murder by shooting of fellow Coast Guard colleague Kurt Hyde, who she shot from behind with a military rifle while coming in to Belize City from San Pedro from duty.

Tzib was ordered to check in once a week at the High Court and was to report 3 times a week at the Orange Walk Police Station and to appear in court in every occasion as part of her bail condition. She has been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression for which she is being treated.

But attorney Saldivar told our court reporter that it was all too much for her: “Given her state, emotionally and psychologically, and given the voluminous conditions, she was unable to fulfill and was found in breach. As a result, bail was revoked today pending sentencing on May 10. We are now in a position where we are preparing submissions for May 10. As you know, this is a very tragic situation. Tzib was a shining light for the Coast Guard as one of the first females to join and not only that, but [with] her academic acumen and capacity being as high as it was, she was on a trajectory to do great things at that institution. It is unfortunate that the institution that she chose to serve actually marshaled itself against her, bringing about a very unfortunate incident that they should bear responsibility for happening.”
