By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City taxi driver known as “Sizzler” has been remanded to prison following an alleged chopping incident reportedly stemming from an $80 dispute over a pair of tennis shoes.

Forty-three-year-old Derick Munnings, also known as “Sizzler” appeared unrepresented on Tuesday morning before the Chief Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. He was read three indictable charges: attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm upon a 23-year-old man.

Due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied and Munnings was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 3, 2026. No plea was taken, as the matters are to be dealt with on indictment.

When asked if he understood the charges, Munnings told the court that the details were not correct. He also questioned how he could be charged with attempted murder, stating that the allegation he aimed chop wounds at Lord’s head “did not happen so.” The Chief Magistrate explained that since he was unrepresented, he need not say anything further and that the court was only confirming his understanding of the charges.

According to police, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at approximately 9:22 p.m., officers responded to information that a male person with chop wounds had been transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH). CIB Northside personnel visited the hospital, where they observed a resident of the Chetumal Street area, suffering from a large chop wound to his right forearm.

Police also observed Munnings with abrasions to his fingers and knees, and he reportedly complained of pain.

Investigations revealed that sometime last week, the man had agreed to sell a pair of tennis shoes for Munnings and hand over the proceeds but had allegedly failed to do so. On February 21, at around 9:10 p.m., while the two men were inside Munnings’ vehicle parked on Marine Parade Boulevard discussing the matter, Munnings allegedly became aggressive, exited the vehicle armed with a machete, and pursued the complainant.

The man reportedly ran toward the Golden Bay area, where Munnings caught up with him near the seaside sidewalk. The two allegedly wrestled on the ground, during which Munnings was seen attempting to chop him. The complainant managed to get up and ran onto the median, but during the struggle, he sustained a chop wound to his forearm while shielding his head.

Police officers in the immediate area responded and subdued Munnings as he allegedly attempted to chop at the man again. Both men were transported to KHMH for treatment. The complainant later underwent surgery for his injuries.

Police say that while receiving treatment, Lord identified Munnings, whom he knows as “Sizzler,” as the person who chopped him over the $80 dispute. Authorities also report that while detained pending investigation, Munnings refused to give a statement when approached by police.

The matter is adjourned to June 3, 2026.
