By Zoila Palma: The Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Investment, through its Investment Policy and Compliance Unit (IPCU), in collaboration with the Taiwan Technical Mission and the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs, concluded the “Cell Phone Repair Training for Women in Belize” in Dangriga Town.
The course was conducted from October 27 to 31 at the Belize Unity Institute for Leadership and Development (BUILD) training room, comprising 50 hours of intensive, hands-on training to 15 women across the Stann Creek District, including Pomona, Mile 28, Hope Creek, Independence, Placencia, and Santa Rosa. The objective of the training was to create self-employment opportunities for the participants while addressing the growing demand for cell phone repair technicians.
A total of 55 phones were repaired in Dangriga, with the most common fixes being the replacement of batteries, screens, and charging ports. Certificates of completion were presented, and cell phone repair kits were distributed to the 15 participants who successfully completed the course. Present at the closing ceremony were Hon. Thea Garcia-Ramirez, Minister of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs; Hon. Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister; His Worship Robert Mariano, Mayor of Dangriga Town; Mrs. Debora Jones, Representative of Dr. Hon. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs and Transportation; Mr. Lincoln Blake, Director of the Investment Policy and Compliance Unit; Mr. Andrew Su, Chief of the Taiwan Technical Mission in Belize; Ms. Seidi Quetzal, Foreign Service Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Culture and Immigration; and Mr. Abisur Quintal, Instructor, Jarvis Fix.
This collaborative partnership between the Ministry of Investment, the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs, and the National Women’s Commission aligns with the mandate of the National Gender Policy 2024-2030 and the Government’s Medium-Term Development Strategy 2022-2026, both of which aim to reduce income and productivity gaps between urban and rural communities through investment, youth skills enhancement, and enterprise development.
