By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Twenty livestock farmers from the More Tomorrow Community and Central Farm on Thursday, July 11, completed a dynamic two-day silvo-pastoral training program. Organized by the Cayo Agriculture Department, this initiative, conducted by Adan Velasquez and Franklin Padron, was aimed at enhancing sustainable farming practices and fostering climate resilience.

The training covered a wide range of topics, equipping participants with practical knowledge and skills such as pasture rotation, electric fencing, live fencing, the Voisin system, and agroforestry integration of fruit trees with cattle and sheep.

“The purpose of the training was to educate farmers on silvo-pastoral systems, which combine forestry and grazing of domesticated animals in a mutually beneficial way,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Safety, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said in a statement.

“This approach not only enhances farm productivity but also contributes to climate change mitigation by improving carbon sequestration, increasing biodiversity, and reducing soil erosion.”

The MAFSE statement said the Cayo Agriculture Department recognized the pivotal role the Research and Development Center played in the training. Their insights on integrating fruit trees like coconuts and soursop were invaluable.

“This integration supports diversified income sources for farmers and enhances the resilience of farming systems to climate impacts,” MAFSE said.

MAFSE added that the Cayo Agriculture Department remains steadfast in its commitment to farmers, acknowledging that continuous training and development programs pave the way for a sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural sector in Belize.
