By Breaking Belize News Staff: The mitigation plea for convicted child kidnapper Kareem Hamilton, 37, revealed deeply troubling details on Monday as the court reviewed a Social Inquiry Report (SIR) outlining the offender’s own admissions of sexual urges toward minors. Hamilton, who pleaded guilty on November 17, 2025, is awaiting sentencing before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court.
Hamilton, represented by attorney Abibi Moguel of Lynden Jones & Associates, admitted in his SIR that he has “a strong urge for sexual desires including towards minors.” When the social worker pressed him on the nature of those urges, Hamilton replied that he did not want to talk about it because he “did not want the devil in him to come out.”
The Crown described the SIR as “very disturbing” and is seeking the highest end of the sentencing range—65%—for the kidnapping offense.
The court also learned that Hamilton gave conflicting accounts of his motive. In a psychiatric evaluation, he claimed the child’s father paid him to “steal” the child. But in the SIR, he told the social worker he wanted to take the child and raise her as his own. The report contains several pages detailing his expressed sexual thoughts toward minors, which the defense conceded were part of the SIR.
Moguel argued, however, that Hamilton has shown willingness to undergo counseling and treatment—something Justice Pilgrim noted as a potential indicator of rehabilitation. The judge requested that both sides clarify the mitigating and aggravating factors before sentencing.
Two victim impact statements were submitted to the court.
The child’s 27-year-old mother wrote:
“My daughter was kidnapped by a man I never knew. I never knew what he wanted with my baby. My child keeps mentioning the incident and is afraid to go back to school. I have lost trust in anyone around me… Our lives will never be the same.”
The 5-year-old victim stated:
“On that day I was sad and angry. Sad because I never knew the man, and angry because I never listened to my mom. When I wake up out of my sleep, I am scared because I am afraid someone will grab me.”
Hamilton pleaded guilty after he was caught on May 16, 2024, walking four houses down the street with the crying child in his arms. Neighbours chased him down, subdued him, and handed him over to police. He initially claimed he was the child’s uncle, a statement proven false.
He remains behind bars awaiting sentencing.
Justice Pilgrim has adjourned the matter to December 17, 2025.
