By Zoila Palma: The cost of living in Belize continued to rise in September, with consumer prices increasing by 4.7 percent compared to September 2025, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The report shows that the All-items CPI rose from 120.5 in September 2025 to 126.2 in September 2026, reflecting higher prices for goods and services regularly purchased by households.
The leading contributors to the increase were transportation, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels. Together, these three categories accounted for approximately three-quarters of the overall rise in consumer prices.
The transportation category recorded a 10.7 percent increase, driven primarily by higher fuel prices and passenger transportation costs.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 4.3 percent, while housing-related costs increased by 4.4 percent, reflecting higher electricity charges, water tariffs and home rental costs.
Other categories also recorded increases, including health services, which rose by 6.4 percent, and restaurants and accommodation services, which increased by 4.3 percent.
Clothing and footwear prices climbed by 3.1 percent, while furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance costs rose by 2.5 percent.
