By Zoila Palma: Food prices showed a general upward movement in March 2026, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The report indicates broad-based increases across several protein categories, with notable variation between beef, poultry, and fish products.
Among beef products, prices rose moderately when compared to March 2025.
Ground beef increased from $7.53 to $7.80 per pound, a 3.6 percent rise, while beef steak climbed 6.9 percent, moving from $10.17 to $10.88. Stew pork also recorded an uptick, rising 6.4 percent from $7.86 to $8.37 per pound.
Poultry prices showed mixed movements.
Whole chicken edged up slightly from $3.23 to $3.26 per pound, while chicken cuts and wings posted modest gains of 0.7 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively. Chicken legs increased by 3.4 percent.
However, chicken breast was the only item in the category to decline, falling 1.1 percent from $4.82 to $4.77 per pound.
Turkey prices continued their upward trend, rising 6.5 percent from $5.79 to $6.17 per pound.
The most significant increase was recorded in fish prices. Whole fish rose sharply by 11.5 percent, moving from $8.86 to $9.88 per pound, making it the highest inflationary movement among the listed food items.
