SIB: Punta Gorda ranks as most expensive municipality

By Zoila Palma:  Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) indicates that inflation rates varied significantly across municipalities in January 2026, with Punta Gorda Town recording the highest increase in consumer prices at 2.6 percent.

Residents of Punta Gorda experienced above-average price increases across several goods and services.

These included food items such as cereal products, meats, and fish, as well as restaurant and café services, school uniforms, men’s footwear, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), domestic and household services, personal care products, cigarettes, and medicinal products.

Meanwhile, Orange Walk Town recorded the lowest municipal inflation rate at –1.9 percent, indicating an overall decline in prices for January 2026. Consumers in this municipality benefited from notable reductions in fuel prices, along with lower costs for several food products including tomatoes, carrots, onions, beans, and watermelon, as well as women’s garments.

Other municipalities across Belize recorded moderate inflation rates.
