By Zoila Palma:  Prices for fruits and vegetables showed mixed trends in May 2026, with some products recording significant increases while others became more affordable compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

Among the items registering the largest price increases were cucumbers, which surged by 24.5 percent, rising from $1.26 per pound in May 2025 to $1.57 per pound in May 2026.

Grapefruits increased by 15.7 percent, while limes climbed by 10.2 percent and watermelons by 9.6 percent.

Grapes also became more expensive, rising 7.1 percent from $10.15 to $10.87 per pound. Apples, broccoli or cauliflower, carrots, and oranges recorded increases ranging from 3.1 to 6.1 percent.

Not all produce items experienced price hikes. Plantains saw the steepest decline, falling by 10 percent from $0.55 to $0.49 per unit.

Corn prices dropped by 7.2 percent, while pineapples and onions each declined by 5.1 percent. Okras fell by 3.8 percent and Irish potatoes by 1.5 percent. Tomatoes remained relatively stable, slipping by just 0.5 percent over the year.
