By Aaron Humes: Soca fans and others gathered in Brooklyn this week for a private screening of Machel Montano’s new documentary, Journey of a Soca King… Like A Boss, held at the Brooklyn Public Library.
The film chronicles the career and influence of the Trinidadian soca artist, widely known as the “Soca King.”
Moses “Shyne” Barrow reflected on the experience on social media, writing, “Machel is not just the Michael Jackson of the Caribbean, he is a friend to Belize…Every time Machel performs in Belize it has been more than a show. He has done everything I asked as far as outreach to the youth and our local musicians, sharing his wealth of knowledge and expertise in both music and life to inspire and empower.”
The documentary showcases that outreach and explores the multiple layers of Montano’s career and his efforts to uplift communities through music and dance.
Journey of a Soca King… Like A Boss begins streaming on Amazon on May 29.
Barrow’s own documentary “The Honourable Shyne” premiered last November as part of his return to the music scene.
