Shyne rejects claims in UDP release; reasserts role as Mesop caretaker

By Zoila Palma:  Shyne Barrow has rejected what he describes as “scurrilous claims” made in a press release circulated and purportedly issued by the United Democratic Party (UDP), which alleges that he is falsely presenting himself as the Area Representative for Mesopotamia.

In a letter addressed to Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton, Barrow said the claims are unfounded and insisted that he remains the duly endorsed UDP Caretaker for the Mesopotamia constituency.

“As a matter of fact, I remain the duly endorsed Caretaker for Mesopotamia as per the UDP Constitution,” Barrow wrote, noting that since his endorsement convention on November 11, 2018, “there has been no Convention, endorsement or contested, to replace me.”

Barrow also disputed assertions regarding Lee Mark Chang, stating that Chang was never the UDP Caretaker or Standard Bearer for Mesopotamia.

He referenced a May 2025 court ruling, writing that “Justice Hondora ruled in May 2025 that you were never the Leader of the UDP at the material time,” and argued that any attempt to appoint Chang to the position was unconstitutional and legally invalid.

Barrow also accused Panton of unlawfully attempting to remove him as UDP Leader in October 2024 and of continuing to act as party leader until the courts ruled otherwise.

He further emphasized that he has never claimed to be the elected Area Representative, stating, “At no time have I stated, indicated or implied that I am currently the Mesopotamia Area Representative elected to the House of Representatives.”

In closing, Barrow urged that internal party disputes be resolved through established UDP mechanisms rather than public exchanges, warning that continued disregard for the party’s constitution could force him to respond publicly.

He said he has so far refrained from public comment in the interest of party unity but cautioned that this position may not remain indefinitely.
