By Horace Palacio: Former Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow took to social media today with a firm declaration: “OCTOBER 20TH WAS INVALID! JUSTICE!” — in response to a landmark ruling from the High Court of Belize that invalidated the United Democratic Party (UDP) meeting held on October 20, 2024.
Justice HHJ Hondora, in a written judgment, ruled that the meeting was not a valid UDP National Convention and that the decisions and resolutions made during the event are not binding on the party’s members.
The judge also ruled that the August 2024 expulsion of Mrs. Panton from the party was unlawful, as it was made in breach of the UDP’s constitution.
Shyne Barrow’s swift reaction on Facebook signals what many are calling a critical victory in his ongoing battle for leadership legitimacy and internal party reform.
With this decision, the future direction of the UDP and its internal power dynamics are once again up in the air. One thing, however, is now clear: the October 20 meeting has no legal weight—and Shyne Barrow’s position just got a powerful legal boost.
