By Breaking Belize News Staff: With the October 8th cannabis referendum fast approaching, Caye Caulker residents could stand to benefit from an open discussion on what a “yes” or “no” vote really means.
Caye Caulker Village Councilor, Ilya Rosado and Church Senator Pastor Louis Wade Jr. would be ideal candidates for a public debate on the issue. Both sides appear to agree that evidence and facts should guide the conversation. Rosado has publicly insisted that residents deserve to hear both the economic benefits and the social risks before making their decision at the ballot box.
Pastor Wade has been one of the most outspoken voices against cannabis legalization, framing it as a moral and social danger with psychological, mental and other negative impacts. Rosado, however, argues that the community needs balanced information including the benefits to tourism, employment and youth.
Whether the debate will be accepted remains to be seen, but the call has already stirred interest among island residents, many of whom want a chance to weigh the issue in an open and respectful forum.
