Shots Fired: Kaya tells Allan ‘Nobody will be handed Belize City’ amid reports Eluide has been asked to withdraw his name from convention

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Following reports that Eluide Miller has been asked by senior party officials to withdraw his candidacy from the upcoming Belize City PUP Mayoral Convention, battle lines have been drawn and Councilor Kaya Cattouse has fired the first shot.

In a Facebook post referencing Allan Pollard’s comments to the media last week when he made his own application to run for the convention, Cattouse wrote: “A week ago, we were told that everyone had the right to run and that democracy should take its course. Today, because the numbers are not lining up the same way, there are now attempts to force a different outcome.”

In making his application, Pollard said: “If Miller wants to contest then he should contest. Every young person, not only Miller, but any young person who wants to run, any older person who wants to run. It’s a Democratic Party.”

But since Pollard made those public comments, reports indicate that efforts have been made by senior PUP party officials to persuade Miller to back out of the convention and cede to Pollard.

Cattouse minced no words, taking aim directly at Pollard, posting: “Let us be clear, nobody told anyone they would be handed the opportunity to lead Belize City. They were told they would be given an opportunity to run. This is your time to run. Come run! Step forward and contest this convention! This is what democracy demands.”

“We stand firmly with Eluide Miller. We are ready for a convention. Let the delegates and the leaders of this city decide.”

It remains to be seen how this will all play out leading up to the convention but it is clear that even for a 3-term councilor, Pollard does not enjoy the support of his fellow councilors like newcomer Miller.

Will Pollard be able to swing enough delegates to secure the convention or will Miller’s support from his colleagues be enough to outweigh Pollard’s seniority?
