By Aaron Humes: On Wednesday evening a shooting incident on Police Street Extension, Belize City, just before 8:30 PM, led to injuries for two individuals.
Ryan Young Jr., a 26-year-old Belizean construction worker, was reportedly struck by gunfire to the upper body, while Corporal Elvis Guzman of the Belize Police Department suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand.
According to initial reports Young Jr. was in the vicinity of Police Street when a black Chevy Equinox pulled up and shots were fired in his direction. Eyewitnesses say that shortly after hearing the gunshots, Corporal Guzman and his colleague, who were on mobile patrol, noticed the same vehicle fleeing the scene.
The two suspects in the Chevy Equinox allegedly leaned out of the back passenger seat and fired multiple shots towards the police vehicle, resulting in Corporal Guzman’s injury. Emergency services were quickly alerted, and Corporal Guzman was transported to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he received immediate medical attention.
Meanwhile, Young Jr. was also taken to the hospital, where he is currently admitted and reported to be in stable condition. Corporal Guzman was treated for his injuries and later discharged.
Investigations are ongoing as police continue to look for the suspects responsible for the attack.
