Sherman Rodney denied bail and remanded to prison for allegedly robbing woman at knife-point

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 35-year-old Belize City man accused of robbing a 22-year-old woman at knifepoint on Antelope Street Extension has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after the court denied him bail on Tuesday.

Sherman Rodney, a resident of Antelope Street and a part-time construction and LIU worker, appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate on a single charge of robbery. He pleaded not guilty.

Police allege that on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Rodney used force while armed with a knife to rob a 22-year-old office assistant of her purse, cash, iPhone, jewelry, and other personal belongings with a total value of $3,325.

According to the prosecution, surveillance footage played a major role in identifying Rodney as the suspect. The court was told that video evidence captured the robber fleeing the area and running into a house on Antelope Street Extension. Police later searched the residence, which belongs to Rodney’s girlfriend, where officers reportedly found Rodney along with jewelry allegedly stolen from the victim.

The prosecutor strongly objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offense, the use of a dangerous instrument, the victim’s age, and what he described as overwhelming surveillance and circumstantial evidence linking Rodney to the robbery. The court was also informed that the charge could later be upgraded to aggravated burglary.

Rodney appealed to the court for bail, arguing that he is presumed innocent and had stayed out of criminal trouble for the past four to five years. He also said he helps care for his disabled niece and mother.

However, the Chief Magistrate was not persuaded and upheld the objection to bail, citing the serious and prevalent nature of robbery offenses and the likelihood of the charge being upgraded.

Rodney was remanded until July 3, 2026, and is expected to remain behind bars through his 36th birthday on June 8.

In a related development, Rodney was also among three people detained at the same residence where police reported finding 8.9 grams of crack cocaine. While Rodney and another accused pleaded not guilty to the drug charge and saw the case withdrawn, Stewart pleaded guilty and was fined.

Police say their investigation continues.
