By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old fisherman from San Pedro has been arraigned and remanded to prison in connection with a triple murder that rocked the island last week.
Shelby Jonathan Hernandez, of the San Pedrito area, appeared unrepresented before the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court late this evening, where he was charged with three counts of murder. He is accused of the killings of Karim Nazim Espat, 28, Oscar Modesto Mas, 35, and Berlin Marisol Bueso Alvarez, 21, a Honduran national.
Due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied and Hernandez was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 27, 2026.
The charges stem from a deadly shooting incident that occurred on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at a residence in the Mosquito Coast area, south of San Pedro Town. Police responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 10:00 p.m. and discovered the bodies of Espat and Mas inside the home, both suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Authorities later learned that Alvarez, who was also inside the house at the time of the attack, had been shot and transported to the San Pedro Polyclinic, where she later succumbed to her injuries just after midnight on March 20.
Investigations revealed that three armed men, dressed in hooded jackets, entered the yard of the home and one of them opened fire on the occupants. Espat’s wife, who was present during the incident, escaped unharmed.
Police processed the scene and recovered multiple expended shells, including 9mm casings and 12-gauge cartridges. Hernandez was detained shortly after the incident and formally charged on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
Police investigations into the triple homicide remain ongoing.
