Sheena Pitts, John Castillo win chairmanship posts at UDP National Convention

By Aaron Humes: Senator Sheena Pitts is the United Democratic Party’s first female chairman after defeating rivals John Saldivar and Roosevelt Blades at the party’s National Convention at Bird’s Isle, Belize City.

Pitts won with 265 votes to 99 for Saldivar and 76 for Blades; she was the choice of newly installed Party Leader Tracy Taegar-Panton.

John Castillo defeated Ivan Williams, former Party Standard bearer in Stann Creek West, by 255 to 168.

A total of 504 delegates voted at the convention, which saw Panton, first deputy leader Hugo Patt and second deputy leader Miguel Guerra ran unopposed.

The party has sought to downplay still open wounds from its years-long division and rivalry, insisting they come out of today a truly “United” Democratic Party ahead of mid-term municipal elections due in 2027.

The new leaders are being sworn in by outgoing Acting Chairman Alberto August as the Convention draws to a close.
