Several Belize archaeological reserves remain closed this Saturday

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Institute of Archaeology (IA) has issued an urgent advisory this Saturday morning, December 27, 2025, informing the public and tourism stakeholders of the closure of several major archaeological reserves.

As of 5:30 AM, the Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve, including the hand-cranked ferry, is officially closed. This decision comes as a result of elevated river conditions making crossing and site access unsafe for visitors.

Furthermore, the Institute confirmed that the following sites remain closed due to similar water level concerns:

  • Nohoch Che’en (Cave Tubing)
  • Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM)
  • Barton Creek

While these river-based sites are currently off-limits, the IA notes that all other archaeological reserves across Belize remain open to the public.

The Institute of Archaeology says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as water levels recede. Travelers and tour operators are encouraged to exercise caution and plan itineraries accordingly.
