By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City driver accused of burglarizing Divine Mercy Church on the Phillip Goldson Highway has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being denied bail in court.
Denfield Lemott, 47, of Raccoon Street, appeared before the Chief Magistrate, where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of burglary. He is accused of entering the office of the church administrator as a trespasser and stealing a black cash pan containing $2,000 in cash.
The alleged burglary occurred on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, sometime between 12:30 p.m. and 12:35 p.m. Police say the church administrator had left her office briefly to go to a nearby kitchen in another part of the building. When she returned, she reportedly saw an unknown man near the rear door of the church and later noticed that the cash pan was missing from a cabinet.
The administrator shouted for a man who was working in the garden, and both reportedly attempted to intercept the suspect as he walked along the Phillip Goldson Highway toward James Brodies Ltd. However, the man allegedly jumped on a motorcycle parked near the Atlantic Restaurant parking lot and escaped onto the Phillip Goldson Highway before disappearing toward Chetumal Street.
Police later reviewed surveillance footage from a nearby business, which reportedly helped investigators identify Lemott as the suspect. He was later detained in Roaring Creek Village and handed over to police at the Queen Street Police Station.
In court, there was no objection to bail from the prosecution, but the Chief Magistrate denied bail in the first instance, noting that Lemott had reportedly been granted bail two weeks ago in connection with another burglary allegation. Lemott begged the court for bail and asked for mercy, but he was remanded until October 2, 2026.
Police say Lemott declined to participate in an interview under caution while in custody.
