By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The San Ignacio and Santa Elena communities continue to voice their disappointment after the recent St. George’s Caye Day parade, citing concerns over the participation of certain “dance groups.”
Photos and videos of underage girls performing in the parade have circulated widely on social media, prompting a wave of criticism from Belizeans.
The September Celebrations Committee, in collaboration with the SISE Child Advisory Board has issued a statement urging Dance Group coordinators, parents and guardians of the importance of maintaining the integrity of these events, particularly where our youths are involved.
“The September Celebrations are a time for national pride, unity, and festivity. We wholeheartedly welcome the participation of our young people. It is essential that our youth engage in these celebrations, experiencing the rich cultural heritage, community spirit, and national pride that these festivities represent,” the statement said.
However, the committee and the child advisory board are concerned about reports of inappropriate dance moves by youths during the parade.
“Such actions do not reflect the values we promote in our Twin Town Municipality. While we encourage youth participation in these events, we emphasize that this behavior is unacceptable and detracts from the true spirit of celebration,” the statement added.
Dance group coordinators, parents, guardians, teachers, and the wider community are urged to actively guide and monitor the involvement of our youth.
In addition, dance groups are encouraged to perform in the following choreography categories: Pom-Pom, Banner/Flag Waving &/Or Synchronized March to ensure the celebrations remain wholesome, respectful, family-appropriate, and aligned with cultural values.
