By Breaking Belize News Staff: The sentencing of 22-year-old Cassian Steve Billary, who was convicted last month for the 2020 murder of teenager Micah Baltazar, has been delayed once again due to the unavailability of a required Social Inquiry Report (SIR).
Billary, who was found guilty on June 13, 2025, appeared before Justice Candace Nanton on Thursday morning expecting to learn his fate. However, Justice Nanton was forced to adjourn the sentencing after it was revealed that no social worker from the Community Rehabilitation Department had yet visited the convicted man to complete the SIR.
When asked directly in court, Billary confirmed that no one had spoken to him since the report was ordered. Justice Nanton, emphasizing the importance of the document in determining an appropriate sentence for the serious charge of murder, adjourned the matter to a later date, tentatively set for Thursday, July 24, 2025.
Billary was just 18 years old when he was accused of fatally shooting 19-year-old Micah Baltazar in December 2020. During his trial, he claimed he acted under duress, stating it was either “kill or be killed.” However, Justice Nanton rejected his account, ruling it lacked credibility and ultimately found him guilty.
Billary is currently awaiting sentencing at the Belize Central Prison and is represented by attorney Leeroy Banner.
