By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Following a meeting of the UDP executive on August 28, 2024, in which the party moved to “constructively resign” senior UDP members Tracy Panton, Patrick Faber, John Saldivar and Beverly Williams, all have come out swinging effectively saying they have not resigned, constructively or otherwise, from the UDP.
The Alliance for Democracy led by Panton called out the UDP and leader Shyne Barrow after the decision was made.
“This has to be the most absurd motion that Shyne Barrow has proposed and passed through his handpicked CEC during his less than stellar time as Party Leader. No one can tell what is the effective purpose of this declaration as it falls short of expelling the senior members who have been on a crusade for upholding the democratic principles of the Party,” the alliance explained.
Faber posted to social media saying that he is “the longest serving member of parliament, former chairman, deputy party leader/ deputy PM and former party leader… do you really think you can constructively resign me? LMAO!!”
Saldivar also issued a statement saying that he follows the Party Constitution and respect Shyne Barrow as the current Party Leader.
“In fact, I campaigned for him to become the Party Leader. However, that same Constitution gives me the right to sign a petition to recall the Party Leader at anytime. Michael Peyrefitte and the Central Executive Committee cannot decide for me whether I have constructively resigned nor can they say for me when I have become a part of another party,” Saldivar added.
Panton also issued a statement saying that neither she or her colleagues have resigned from the UDP.
“I, Tracy Taegar Panton, has NOT resigned.
Hon Patrick Faber has NOT resigned.
Beverly Williams has NOT resigned.
John Saldivar has NOT resigned.
We have NO intention of resigning from our great United Democratic Party,” Panton said.
Williams also announced on social media that she is a member of the UDP and remains the UDP standard bearer in Belize Rural Central.
