Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington suspended for ‘grave professional misconduct’

By Aaron Humes: The General Legal Council Has Found 77 year old Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington guilty of “grave professional misconduct”.

This arises from a complaint made by a client where “Senior Counsel Elrington took $6,000.00 from the Complainant to institute a claim for her against Scotia Bank Belize and neglected to institute the claim for many years. He also failed to keep the Complainant updated about the claim and took on the matter when he could not have performed the required work without delay. To compound matters, Senior Counsel Elrington gave an undertaking to the Council to repay the money in settlement of the complaint and failed to do so.”

As a consequence, the GLC has found him guilty of “grave professional misconduct and “hereby orders that

Senior Counsel Elrington pay to the Complainant by way of restitution the total sum of $6,000.00…and that Senior

Counsel Elrington be suspended from the practice of law for a period of six months and for such longer period of times as any part of the monies hereby ordered to be paid remains unpaid.”

The notice of his suspension has been sent to all courts.
