By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 62-year-old construction worker, Marner Jose Alamina, narrowly avoided a one-year driving disqualification on Wednesday after pleading guilty to operating a vehicle without valid insurance.
Alamina, a resident of Mortuary Lane, appeared before the magistrate in Court #5 where he was charged with driving a motor vehicle not covered by third party risk insurance. The offense occurred on Monday, March 31, while he was driving a silver Ford Ranger with license plate BCZ-268327 on East Collet Canal.
In court, Alamina admitted fault, telling the magistrate: “I messed up. I never checked it before I moved it, so I am guilty of that charge.”
He was fined $150 plus $5 in court costs, which he paid immediately, avoiding the default sentence of one week in prison.
Though the offense typically carries a 12-month driving disqualification, the magistrate opted for leniency, noting it was Alamina’s first offense in over 30 years of driving. Alamina also acted promptly after the incident by insuring the vehicle within half an hour of being charged, which worked in his favor.
Grateful for the court’s leniency, Alamina expressed relief, emphasizing his clean driving record and commitment to never repeating the mistake.
