Leader of Government Business Senator Eamon Courtenay emphasized the need to standardize the exemption package to create clear guidelines for these major investments, likely to include all three proposed cruise ports and at least one hotel investment. He highlighted the goal of attracting investments without negotiating individual deals, thereby promoting transparency and consistency.
Minister of State for Finance Christopher Coye highlighted the recent trends in investment growth in Belize. He revealed data indicating a notable increase in investment, not limited to foreign direct investment, with a significant surge in 2021 and continued growth in 2022.
In contrast, Lead Opposition Senator Michael Peyrefitte raised concerns about the necessity of granting extensive exemptions to entities with significant financial resources. He questioned the rationale behind providing such benefits if a company already has U.S. $250 million in capital, emphasizing the need to examine the proposed bill thoroughly.
Business Senator Kevin Herrera expressed apprehension about the substantial investment threshold, questioning the practicality of attracting investments of such magnitude in a relatively small economy like Belize. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach to incentivize investments without setting the bar too high.
