By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Ranger Security Guard was convicted of drug trafficking on Monday in the Belize Magistrate’s Court on Coney Drive after being caught in possession of 90 grams of marijuana inside a school bag.
The accused, 22-year-old Lionel Llewellyn Young III, a security guard of Barbara Harris Street in the Holy Emmanuel area of Belize City, was unrepresented in court. He appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3, where he was read a single charge of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.
The drug bust occurred on February 23, 2025, on Barbara Harris Street. When asked to enter a plea, Young pleaded guilty. The Senior Magistrate ensured he understood his plea and informed him that a penalty would be imposed.
Young stated that he had not consulted an attorney but was willing to proceed with sentencing. As a first-time offender for drug trafficking, he was fined rather than given a custodial sentence. The Senior Magistrate considered the seriousness of the offense, the quantity of drugs, the prevalence of such crimes, and Young’s cooperation with the police. However, the court also noted that he had a prior conviction for smoking cannabis in public, for which he was fined $55.
Due to his early guilty plea, Young was granted a one-third discount on his sentence. He was fined $600 plus a $5 court cost and given until May 30, 2025, to pay. Failure to do so will result in four months of imprisonment.
