By Zoila Palma: Representatives from the Belize Defence Force (BDF), Belize Coast Guard (BCG), Belize Police Department (BPD), and UNICEF met today to advance efforts in capacity building and human rights training within the country’s security forces.
The high-level discussion focused on strategies to strengthen the protection of military and law enforcement personnel—particularly in relation to a proposed Joint Sexual Assault Policy—as well as safeguarding women, children, and other vulnerable populations during security operations.
Key topics included developing joint training programs, improving institutional knowledge on human rights, and creating a unified approach across all branches of the security services.
Officials also explored how UNICEF can support future training initiatives and provide technical assistance for policy development.
Each participating agency will now take the lead in promoting these strategies within their respective institutions, with a shared goal of ratifying the Joint Sexual Assault Policy and enhancing overall protection and accountability standards across the country’s security forces.
