By Breaking Belize News Staff: A repeat offender will be spending his 35th birthday behind bars after pleading guilty to burglary for breaking into a Ladyville business and stealing a $200 security camera—one that had recorded his every move.
Thirty-four-year-old Shawn Cook was sentenced to 3½ years in prison by Magistrate Mannon Dennison on Wednesday after he admitted to burglarizing Belize Sky Water Shop, located at Mile 10 on the Philip Goldson Highway.
According to police, Cook was caught on surveillance footage breaking into the small camper-style shop around 1:00 a.m. on October 11. When he realized he was being recorded, he stole the very same camera to destroy the evidence, however, he did not take the DVR, where the security footage was stored. Unfortunately for him, investigators quickly identified him from the footage.
Cook, who has been accused of burglary before but previously acquitted, was not so fortunate this time. During the investigation, he confessed to the crime and led police to his home, where he handed over the stolen Wyze brand camera, telling officers, “This da the camera I took from Sky Water Shop.”
In court, Cook claimed he entered the business only to “look around” and intended to return the items because he knew the owner. Magistrate Dennison rejected that excuse, noting that Cook was a “seasoned offender” who showed little regard for other people’s property.
The break-in caused an estimated $609 in losses and damages, including a broken window and destroyed equipment.
Cook will now spend his next three birthdays behind bars—starting with his 35th on October 27.
