By Zoila Palma: The Belize Fisheries Department informs all fishers and the public that, in accordance with Statutory Instruments No. 67 of 2009 and No. 107 of 2022, the sea cucumber fishery will close between February 1 and July 31, 2026.
The principal Regulation 2 sub-section 10 states:
“No person shall fish for, harvest, buy, sell, possess, export, or attempt to export any sea cucumber species between February 1 and July 31, inclusive, in any year.”
The Belize Fisheries Department warns that anyone found in possession of sea cucumber during this period will be charged and prosecuted in a court of law in accordance with the Fisheries Regulations.
The assistance of the fishing community and the public is greatly appreciated in ensuring the sustainable use and conservation of this important fishery resource.
