By Zoila Palma: Today, the Fisheries Department officially announced the opening of the 2026–2027 sea cucumber fishing season, pursuant to the Fisheries Resources (Sea Cucumber) Regulations under Statutory Instrument No. 107 of 2022.
The season will commence on September 1, 2026, and continue through January 31, 2027, or until the national catch quota is fully realized, whichever occurs first.
The public is advised that commercial fishing operations will be permitted in fishing areas 2 through 8 only; fishing area 1 will remain closed for the duration of the season.
Fishers holding a valid commercial fishing license who are interested in participating in the upcoming harvest must apply for a Special Sea Cucumber Fishing License in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 67 of 2009.
- Applications will be accepted during the period of August 18–31, 2026.
- The special license fee is BZ$75.00.
- All fishers on board any vessel engaged in sea cucumber fishing must possess a valid special sea cucumber fishing license.
The Fisheries Department urges all commercial fishers to complete their licensing applications early and strictly adhere to all guidelines to support the sustainability of the marine ecosystem.
