By Zoila Palma: The Sayab Farmers Co-operative Society Ltd. of San Antonio Village, Cayo, has been named the winner of Belize’s first Agricultural Co-operative of the Year award. The Concepcion Vegetable Farmers Co-operative Society Ltd. of Corozal placed a close second.
Sayab Farmers, registered in July 2022, earned top honors for their innovative approach to organic farming and community-driven agro-processing.
They will receive BZ$2,000 in agricultural inputs.
The runner-up, Concepcion Vegetable Farmers, formed in 2020 and formally registered in 2022, will receive BZ$1,500 in inputs.
Judges and funders were so impressed by both co-operatives that a consolation prize was added.
The initiative, led by the Department of Co-operatives, Ministry of Agriculture, GEF-SGP UNDP, and BEST, aims to promote excellence and inspire greater productivity across Belize’s agricultural co-operatives.
