By Zoila Palma: The Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development (SACD) recently participated in the Mangrove Restoration Tracking Tool Training held from November 5th to 7th. The hands-on workshop, hosted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) under the Global Mangrove Alliance, focused on enhancing collaboration and technical expertise among conservation organizations.
Participants were trained to use a specialized web-based tool designed to track, share, and improve mangrove restoration projects across Belize and the wider region.
As part of the practical sessions, participants conducted pre-restoration assessments at the Belize Coast Guard Headquarters and St. John’s College, guided by protocols from the Mangrove Action Project (MAP).
These field exercises provided valuable insights into current mangrove conditions and helped generate key recommendations to guide future restoration initiatives along the country’s coastline.
The training brought together several conservation partners, including Sea of Life, the Belize Forest Department, the Three Lagoons Sustainability Program (TLSP), the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE), and the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC), among others. Collectively, these organizations continue to work toward the shared mission of protecting and restoring Belize’s vital coastal and marine ecosystems.
This session marked Part 2 of the training series, following the first phase held earlier this year in Placencia.
SACD reaffirmed its commitment to building technical capacity and strengthening partnerships for mangrove conservation.
