By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Riding his last race as a Junior cyclist, Santino’s Devontae Bennett captured the top spot in the Chief’s ‘Single Cien’ Boxing Day Junior Cycling Classic, sponsored by Santino Castillo, on Tuesday.
As of January 1, 2024, for the Krem’s New Year’s Cycling Classic, Bennett will be riding in the Elite Category.
Bennett was fourth overall behind the top three Elite riders led by G-Flow’s Jyven Gonzalez.
The 100-kilometre (62.5-mile) race went from Old Belize on the Under Philip Goldson Highway to Democracia turned on to the Coastal Highway and then turned back to Old Belize.
Ivan Usher rode in second and Malaki Myvett was third.
Only three of 15 Juniors finished as 12 were passed by Master riders. Santino said the rule was that any Elite or Junior Rider who was passed by the Master riders, who started seven minutes later, would be queued.
In total, 75 riders started in the joint Elite/Junior Categories race, including Elite cyclists.
