At the inauguration of Santander’s 10th harvest season Prime Minister John Briceño described 2026 as a transformative year for Belize’s sugar industry, highlighting the company’s expansion into sugar refining as a historic milestone.
“This year’s harvest season, however, is a very, very, special one,” the Prime Minister said, noting that Santander will not only harvest sugarcane but will also refine “close to 40,000 metric tons of sugar late in the crop as its state-of-the-art refinery is expected to be completed by mid-2026.”
Calling the refinery a “major development,” Briceño said it marks “a bold step forward for Belize and the future of our sugar industry.”
He emphasized that “2026 is a game changer for Santander and Belize,” pointing to the company’s projected harvest of over 750,000 metric tons of cane.
“It is crystal clear that the future for Belize’s sugar is looking bright,” Briceño added, concluding, “Thank you and May God bless Santander with a bountiful crop!!!”
