By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 23-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed in a shooting at a bus stop in Hattieville on Saturday afternoon, in a daylight attack that has shaken communities across the country.
The victim has been identified as Jane Urbina of Santa Elena, Cayo. According to reports, she was waiting for a bus to return home when a gunman approached and opened fire, striking her several times. She suffered fatal injuries, and her unborn baby did not survive. She had been just about two months away from giving birth to her first child.
Police say they believe the shooting was a targeted attack. Information suggests that two people arrived at the area on a motorcycle, and that one of them got off, approached Urbina, and fired several shots before the motorcycle sped off in the direction of Belize City. Investigators are now searching for two suspects who they believe are from Belize City.
Shortly before the shooting, Urbina had visited her brother, a police constable who is currently on remand at the Belize Central Prison in connection with a separate murder case. He has been charged but not convicted, and police say they are looking into whether that case may be linked to Saturday’s attack. So far, no connection has been confirmed and no motive has been established.
For Urbina’s family, the loss is almost too much to bear. Relatives describe her as a loving, joyful young woman who was overjoyed at the thought of becoming a mother. They are now pleading for justice. “Why would they hurt her? She hasn’t done anybody anything,” one grieving relative said. “All we want, please, just give us justice.”
As the family prepares to lay both mother and child to rest, they are calling on police to do everything possible to find those responsible. Anyone with information is asked to contact the nearest police station.
