By Zoila Palma: Students and residents of Santa Cruz Village in the Orange Walk District are celebrating the opening of a new, modern primary school compound built to provide a safer and more comfortable learning environment for children in the community.
The facility, valued at approximately $1.33 million, was constructed through a partnership among the Belize Social Investment Fund (BSIF), the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
The new school compound was strategically built on higher, more secure ground to protect students and infrastructure from frequent flooding that has long affected the area. Its location also minimizes exposure to heavy vehicular traffic by being set away from the community’s busiest zones, ensuring a safer space for students and staff.
Equipped with four classrooms, bathroom facilities, an administrative office, a kitchenette, and storage space, the facility reflects the government’s continued commitment to improving education infrastructure across rural Belize. The design emphasizes both functionality and resilience, providing a sustainable learning environment for generations to come.
During the inauguration ceremony, BSIF officials also signed contracts and broke ground for the construction of a new pre-school in Santa Cruz Village, marking another important step in expanding early childhood education in the district.
