By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Maya Leaders of Southern Belize announced that Santa Ana in Southern Belize celebrated a leadership transition within their traditional Alcaldes system, highlighted by the installation of new leaders and the historic appointment of Elizabeth Mejangre as the first woman to serve as village police.
This milestone celebration was held on January 5, 2025.
This marks a significant step toward gender inclusivity in leadership and a shift in traditional governance to embrace the contributions of women.
An elder offered words of encouragement and guidance, emphasizing the sacred duty of service to the community.
“The event, filled with music, food, and a strong sense of togetherness, symbolized not only the continuation of tradition but also progress, unity, and hope for a future where every voice strengthens the community,” the Maya Leaders community noted.
