By Zoila Palma: Today, the San Pedro Town Council issued a statement saying that it has formally voted to OPPOSE the closure of the existing airport.
“We recognize the importance of the airport to our residents, businesses and tourism industry. Our Council stands with the community in supporting its continued operation and will firmly advocate this position with the Government of Belize and all relevant authorities,” the council said.
The San Pedro Town Council says that the proposed new airport is only ONE component of a much larger development concept for Ambergris Caye.
“There are still numerous planning, technical, regulatory and other requirements that would need to be addressed before such a proposal could even advance to formal consideration,” the council added.
In addition, the council says that no decision to close or relocate the existing airport has been made.
