By Breaking Belize News Staff: Ada Toro, a San Pedro resident charged with theft for swindling $500 from a Belize City single mother, was a no-show in court on Thursday, leaving the complainant frustrated and disappointed.

Toro, who used a fake Facebook account impersonating Minister Cordel Hyde to defraud the complainant, had been expected to make her final payment as part of a settlement agreement. However, after waiting for over two hours, the court received a call from Toro around 11:30 a.m., claiming she was ill and at the hospital.

The complainant, a mother of three who had been sitting outside the court, was disheartened by the delay. She expressed frustration, noting that the time spent in court was taking away from her business. She had initially paid Toro $500 for a food stall on Mahogany Street, but never received the stall or a receipt, leading her to report the matter to the police.

Toro was first arraigned on February 21, 2024, on two counts of obtaining property by deception. After receiving full disclosure of the evidence against her, Toro opted to settle the matter to avoid a possible conviction and jail time.

Today was supposed to be the final court appearance to conclude the case, with Toro expected to make her last payment of $200. However, with her absence, the case has been delayed once again. Toro is now required to provide proof of her illness and hospital visit. If she fails to do so, her bail could be revoked, and she may face jail time until the case is resolved.

The complainant left her contact information with the court, hoping to be informed when the case will be rescheduled.
