By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a fire that left multiple families displaced. On Tuesday, April 28, about 2:35 p.m., police responded to reports of multiple house fires in San Pedro Columbia Village, Toledo District.
Upon arrival, they observed several thatch houses destroyed by fire. 47-year-old Alberto Cus, a pastor, reported that while at work, he was informed that the kitchen of his church had burned down. He made checks and discovered that the kitchen, which had a thatched roof, along with another thatched-roof structure, both valued at an estimated $900 each, were completely destroyed by the fire. The main church building, measuring 16 x 14 feet and valued at $7,000, was also damaged by fire.
Police also spoke to the following persons whose properties were likewise damaged by fire: 77-year-old Felecita Makin reported that her thatch house measuring 25 x 35 feet, along with household items, was completely destroyed by the fire. The estimated value of the losses is $10,000.
25-year-old Ann Chi reported that her house measuring 35 x 25 feet, along with all household items valued at $20,000, was completely destroyed by fire.
53-year-old Nereo Hun reported that four thatched houses were destroyed by fire. Two structures measuring 16 x 24 feet, along with household items, were valued at $8,000 each; one kitchen measuring 20 x 18 feet, along with kitchen utensils, was valued at $5,000; and one tool shed measuring 10 x 16 feet was valued at $1,000.
35-year-old Jose Santiago Shol reported that his house measuring 20 x 14 feet was destroyed by fire along with a small concrete structure measuring 15 x 20 feet. The value remains unknown.
None of the buildings, to a total value so far of $51,900, were insured, and no one was injured. The fire was extinguished by fire personnel, assisted by members of the Belize Defence Force and the Police Department. The cause of the fire remains unknown and police continue to investigate.
