By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A San Pedro Town mother’s bicycle vanished from in front of a shop in the ten minutes her daughter spent inside, but video footage, quick police work, and a recovered cruiser have turned the theft into a formal charge, with the bicycle already identified and back in evidence.
According to the Belize Police Department, a 28-year-old shelf attendant of the Boca del Rio Area reported at the San Pedro Police Station on Monday, August 10, 2026, that on Saturday morning, at about 11:30 a.m., she sent her daughter to a mini shop in the area on her red female-frame beach cruiser bicycle, valued at $400.
The child returned about ten minutes later with the news no errand should end with: someone had stolen the bicycle from in front of the store.
The investigation moved on evidence. Video footage was obtained from the shop, from which police identified a suspect. A statement was recorded from the complainant, who requested court action, and a 22-year-old construction worker of the Mosquito Coast area was detained, cautioned, informed of the reason for his detention, and escorted to the San Pedro Police Station, where his rights in custody were explained in a language he understood and he signed the acknowledgement form of his own free will.
The trail then led to the bicycle itself. The detained man was escorted to a residence in the Boca del Rio area, where a resident handed over a red female-frame beach cruiser that had been left at his home. The bicycle was taken to the station and labelled as an exhibit, and the complainant, contacted and shown the bicycle, identified it as hers.
On Monday at 5:30 p.m., police obtained a warrant in the first instance and formally arrested and charged Kevin Hernandez, 22, a Belizean construction worker of Mosquito Coast, San Pedro Town, with the crime of theft. Cautioned after the charge, he chose to remain silent.
