By Aaron Humes: Police say a determination will be made as to fault in the triple crash between a Toyota Corolla, a Ford Expedition SUV, and a motorcycle on Saturday night that killed ten persons and injured two others.
The deceased have been identified as Genesis Parham, Shailer Lopez, Jazelie Lopez, Kailyn Pinelo, Dennis Williams, Abigail Bradley, Jaheim Iglesias, Amy Hernandez, Alessandro Carrillo and Jasmine Hernandez. All except Carrillo were in the Corolla. In the Expedition were couple Frank and Janellie Burns, who remain in stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH). Their two children, who were with them, have been treated and released.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero indicated that the Corolla “entered the lane of the [Expedition] SUV [and] there was a head-on collision.” The motorcycle, driven by Carrillo, subsequently collided with the vehicles, which burst into flames.
Additionally, police have confirmed that they had set up a checkpoint in the area before the incident, but that the Corolla, which was a private vehicle and not a taxi, ran through the checkpoint and failed to stop.
The accident has been confirmed as the deadliest in modern Belizean history, surpassing the November 27, 2019 collision that killed several Belizeans and tourists.
