By Zoila Palma:  San Ignacio and Santa Elena recorded the highest inflation rate among Belize’s municipalities in May 2026, according to the latest Consumer Price Index report released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The twin towns registered an inflation rate of 5.6 percent when compared to May 2025, exceeding the national average of 4.3 percent.

The SIB reported that consumers in San Ignacio and Santa Elena faced above-average increases in the cost of transportation, food and non-alcoholic beverages, medical services, water, electricity, restaurant and café services, clothing and footwear, cigarettes, and recreational services.

These higher costs contributed to the municipality recording the country’s highest rate of inflation for the month.

Meanwhile, San Pedro Town recorded the lowest inflation rate among municipalities at 3.3 percent.

Despite the lower overall increase, residents still experienced notable price hikes for fuel, passenger transport services by road and sea, restaurant and café services, water, electricity, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), medical services, and non-alcoholic beverages.
